Film: Thirst

Is water a human right or a commodity to be bought and sold in the global marketplace? For a look into this question, come join Sustainable Tulsa and Films for Thought at the Nightingale for the screening and discussion of Thirst. Thirst Monday, February 20 at 7:00pm Nightingale Theatre 1416 E. Fourth St., Tulsa The event is free and open to the public, but donations for the use of the space will be gladly accepted. For more information call Keeshi @ 808-7713. More About the Film . . . Thirst vividly documents the global resistance to water privatization. Centered by footage from the Third World Water Forum in Kyoto, Japan, the film parallels stories from Cochabamba, Bolivia, Rajasthan, India and Stockton, California. This is the first film that deals directly with the global corporate drive to privatize water resources — a worldwide threat to public health, welfare and trust. Narratives in the film look at corporate takeovers of municipal water utilities, the perverse commercialization of bottled water, and bulk water sales and transfers. The central story in Thirst takes place in Stockton, California. Mayor Gary Podesto proposes to give control of the water system to a consortium of global water corporations. He is surprised by the reaction as Stockton residents create a new grassroots coalition to demand a say in the decision.

Segregation Returning to Oklahoma County Public Library?
13 Feb 2006
trying to impose book segregation based on the content of books Op-Ed Why are some of the Library Commissioners so interested in supressing diversity in Oklahoma County? Why are they afraid of a minority that has never harmed them or their families? But some Commissioners are intent on fulfilling their private prejudice wherever they see it in a public place. Why are some of the Library Commissioners so interested in supressing diversity in Oklahoma County? Why are they afraid of a minority that has never harmed them or their families? But some Commissioners are intent on fulfilling their private prejudice wherever they see it in a public place. Dear of friend of equality and fellow tax-payer, Like you, I'm glad racial segregation was outlawed a generation ago. However, some members of the Metropolitan Library Commission of Oklahoma County--your public library--are trying to impose book segregation based on the content of books which they find contrary to their personal point-of-view. Specifically, age-appropriate children's books written to outline the diversity of families in Oklahoma County, including gay families, are threatened with exclusion to separate shelving with access only by adults. Don't you think a book should be cataloged and shelved by considering only it's content and not the religious and political prejudice of others? Here is the motion to be discussed and voted on at the February 16, Library Commission meeting-- Motion from Special Committee: The special committee moves that a special section be created with the children's area of all MLS locations. Materials for easy readers, readers, and tweens will be shelved in this section. The collection within this section would include all books/materials identified as: child abuse, child abuse prevention, child sexual abuse, child sexual abuse prevention, domestic/family violence, drug abuse, substance abuse, medication abuse, alcoholism, homosexuality, premarital sex, extramarital sex. Other subjects identified as useful to families based on requests, patterns of use or, in the judgment of staff, are thought to support our patron's needs in parenting may be included. ============================================= And here is the policy that will be used to help implement this motion should it pass: All Easy, Reader and Tween titles (currently owned and future additions) with the subject heading 'homosexuality' or 'homosexuality--fiction' will be permanently placed in this section. ============================================= The special committee is allowing other children's books in this special section to rotate, but gay-positive themed books will NOT. All of these segregated books will have special markings on the spines indicating they are to be kept on segregated shelves. If you're reading this you know there is nothing inherently abusive, addictive, dishonest or illegal about being a gay/lesbian parent or individual. Being gay/lesbian is not addictive, violent, or abusive. Yet the expressed direction of this motion will contradict the humanity of you and your children. Do you feel as strongly as I do that our Oklahoma County Library System should be free of homophobia and adhere to professional standards, offering all customers the same opportunities for information without editorial coloring? This topic will be on the agenda of the full Commission on February 16, Thursday, 3:30pm Village Library, 10307 N. Pennsylvania, between Britton and Heffner. There is plenty of parking. You can attend this meeting or you can send faxs, letters, and phone calls to the Metro Library Commission at these numbers and address (call the library for the proper email address): Metropolitan Library System 300 Park Avenue Oklahoma City, OK 73102 The phone number is (405) 606-3726 Note: Faxes may be sent to Library Commission members at the library system's administrative offices: (405) 606-3722 For your information I've included some points you may want to consider in your response: Reinstitution of social segregation Fear of minorities Gay people involved in all aspects of American society Segregation is the wrong example for a public library to present Metro Library is in full compliance with local/state/federal laws As a public service Metro must accommodate many religious and political viewpoints without undue comment Oklahoma County has a wide diversity of viewpoints both social, religious and political Is the Commission's legacy going to be one of domination by the majority, squelching minorities they don't like? Personal dislikes have no place in a public decision-making body Bringing personal discomfort to a public commission does not serve the public interest All law-abiding, tax-payers have the right to access library services and information without artificial restrictions Professional library standards enhance the opportunities of living in Oklahoma County Call me with your comments and questions, James Nimmo 405-843-3651 james_nimmo@mailcity.com

Stage 2 of the process of rebirth for OKIMC.org
28 Jan 2006
A call for your participation in the soon to be revived Oklahoma Independent Media Center! A call for your participation in the soon to be revived Oklahoma Independent Media Center! A call for your participation in the soon to be revived Oklahoma Independent Media Center! I have now received a fair bit of response from readers and participants with OKIMC.org (see earlier story - http://okimc.org/newswire.php?story_id=1406) The consensus I've heard is that folks do want to see the IMC continue. What is not clear is how we should do it. Some have suggested that is time to pull away from the Indymedia.org network and focus on just local stuff, others have suggested that we stay the course (and continue as a member of the global network) but get more volunteers involved and do more fundraising. So, in light of this input and the new interest that seems to be present to keep the IMC going, I've set up an email discussion group to continue this process (please do not use the old list - imc-okla(at)lists.indymedia.org... it is not private and everything said there can be picked up on google. I'm sending this message to that list, but will soon be cancelling that list). To subscribe to the list, please go to: www.yahoogroups.com/group/okimc Once we get folks on the new list, we can start discussing what we want to do. All Oklahomans who care about OKIMC.org are welcome to join the list, but I'm particularly hoping to pull together a core group of folks who would be willing to be part of an editorial collective to keep this thing going. Thanks, James Branum for OKIMC.org P.S. Also, I know that yahoogroups is a commercial service. I'm not crazy about it for that reason, but it is easy awfully easy to use and all of the other lists I run are through yahoogroups so it is just a lot less hassle to use it for this purpose.

Seeking input --- What should the future of OKIMC.org be?
17 Jan 2006
Please respond by January 22, 2006 Report for members/contributors of OKIMC.org Hello folks,As the last remaining active member of the OKIMC editorial collective, I would like to solicit the input of the users of the OKIMC.org on what the future of this endeavor should be, and whether we should continue it in its current form, whether it should be significantly changed, or whether it is time to end this project. Please read on for some of my thoughts on this... Hello folks, As the last remaining active member of the OKIMC editorial collective, I would like to solicit the input of the users of the OKIMC.org on what the future of this endeavor should be, and whether we should continue it in its current form, whether it should be significantly changed, or whether it is time to end this project. Please read on for some of my thoughts on this... The Oklahoma IMC has been going for quite awhile and started before I got involved with it. Over time it was recognized as part of the Indymedia.org network/collective and things seemed to be going pretty well. We have had a few hiccups along the way (some on the technology end of things, as we changed what IMC software we used) but for the most part things have continued on. However, on the negative side of things what was once a small community of media activists has turned into something else. Due to life changes and just the way things go, most of our key folks have moved on to other things which has left me being the guy who keeps the hosting bill paid (thanks of course to the donors who send me money when I let them know we're running short on cash) and does the administrative end of things. As far as what local news is actually being posted, it's pretty meager. The newswire mostly consists of cross-posts from conspiracists (a lot of which I hide and/or delete because I think it crosses the line into libel). Some local stuff gets posted (which I try to always get upgraded to "feature" status) but not that much original stuff even then is posted. And to boot we get massive amounts of traffic and pretty consistently exceed our bandwidth allotment with our ISP (close to 4 GB per month right now). Our host has been mighty tolerant of this thus far but I think we'll have to upgrade our account if this continues. So my question is given all of these factors, what should the future of OKIMC.org be. Here are the options as I see them: (1) We continue the course, remaining as a member of the Indymedia.org collective and maintaining an open publishing policy - If we do this, we will continue to get massive traffic (mostly from non-Okies) and will have to upgrade our hosting account. We also would have to get new volunteers to help on the editorial side of things as I'm pretty weary of having to delete material that could be libelous or otherwise illegal that conspiracists post. (2) We continue to be OKIMC.org but we change our format to be exclusively local in focus and possibly leave the Indymedia.org network altogether. - If we did this, we would no longer be an open-publishing setup but instead would be moderated to only allow Oklahoma folks to post to the website and/or only permit local news to be reported and discussed. From a tech end, we could quit using our current IMC software altogether and replace it with a blog/CMS type of thing, such as wordpress (examples of sites I currently run using Wordpress are JMBzine.com, okobjector.org, and joymennonite.org). (3) We quit this endeavor altogether - I think there is a good argument that while we've done a lot of good in the past, there are now lots of free speech outlets out there, particularly with the plethora of local political blogs, and that maybe it is time to let this project go. Of those three choices, I do not think option #1 is a good choice UNLESS more folks get involved. I don't mind to continue being the "treasurer" of OKIMC, but I don't have the time or energy anymore to be the point person for administrating this website, particularly when it comes to editing material that could leave us (or more accurately myself) exposed the legal liability Option #3 might be in the fact prove to be the best choice, but it is one that I really hate to see happen. All of the aggravations aside, I still think the IMC concept has a lot of worth and I hate to give up on it. Option #2 right now makes the most sense to me. It continues on the work of OKIMC but refines its focus to be on LOCAL news and commentary. It also would be easier to manage if there are few other volunteers and financially would be easier to pull off. Since we do not have a functioning editorial collective at this point, I think the best way to make this decision is to announce the consideration of the question on the IMC itself and also to let our past contributors and contributors know about it. If you have input on this decision please let me know by email (jmb (at) okcnlg (dot) org) or phone (405-476-5620) by Sunday, January 22, 2006. If I don't hear input by then, I'll do what I think is best. If I do hear input by then, then I will try to work with those who have input on crafting a solution that makes sense to all involved. If those offering input want to be part of the editorial collective, great, we as a group can make a decision, but if those offering input do not want to be part of the collective then I will make the decision on my own, as informed by the input given. Lastly to help in this decision making process, I've pasted in below a report on our current financial situation (this shows the fall of last year and January of this year) J.M. Branum for OKIMC.org Financial Report: Q4 2005 Transactions -$25 (balance as of Sept 30, 2005) -10 (hosting bill October 2005) -10 (hosting bill November 2005) +25 donation (nov. 14, 2005) +100 donation (Nov. 16, 2005) -10 (hosting bill December 2005) == $70 (balance of Dec. 31, 2005) Q1 2006 Transactions $70 (balance as of Dec 31, 2005) -10 (hosting bill January 2006) == $60 (balance as of January 17, 2006)

Sex and Politics Make Strange Symbiotic Bedfellows

Why are gay men in Oklahoma City reduced to a more strict interpretation of the First Amendment righ Homophobes are furious that the Lawrence decision removed a major club with which they could use against gay people. They will continue to use what remaining weapons they can find in their arsenal to defeat our drive for gay equality. Homophobes are furious that the Lawrence decision removed a major club with which they could use against gay people. They will continue to use what remaining weapons they can find in their arsenal to defeat our drive for gay equality. Sex and Politics Make Strange Symbiotic Bedfellows (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA) The arrest in Oklahoma City of Southern Baptist minister Lonnie Wayne Latham, known as "Luke" to his first-name friends, has brought to wide national attention not only his glorious, sweaty-palmed, wet-armpit-inducing hypocrisy that the fundamentally challenged are prone to exercise, but also the symbiotic intersection of casual sex and politics. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/01/04/AR2006010402377.html http://www.channeloklahoma.com/news/5887178/detail.html?treets=okl&tid=2652854780813&tml=okl_12pm&tmi=okl_12pm_1_12000201062006&ts=H Mr. Latham was arrested in Oklahoma City on the night of January 3, and was charged with soliciting a lewd act from an undercover policeman who was in the predominately gay club district to investigate reports from motorists complaining of curbside solicitations. According to wire service stories and the Oklahoman newspaper, which quoted police reports, Mr. Latham followed the unmarked police car where the two drivers then stopped at the parking lot of a vacant office building. Mr. Latham then engaged the undercover policeman in conversation which included an invitation to return to Mr. Latham's motel room for oral sex. The police report says there was no offer of or exchange of money. Mr. Latham contends he was ministering his religious counsel and he is a victim of a police setup. Since his arrest, Mr. Latham has resigned his senior minister position at south Tulsa Baptist Church as well as his executive committee seat on Southern Baptist Convention. Did Mr. Latham also have to relenquish the use of a 2005 Mercedes which was briefly impounded at the time of his arrest? Mr. Latham is, or was, a strong supporter of the disproven idea held in fundamental religious circles that teaches gay men and women can change their sexual orientation if they would just turn themselves over to the god of the fundamentalist. It must be a hard lesson to learn--to practice what one preaches--since in this case Lonnie "Luke" has failed his lesson, who knows how many times? It must be difficult if an outspoken man of the cloth is unable to resist some out-of-town cruising and uses a nickname. Perhaps that's why so few gay people make that leap of "faith", which means believing in something for which there is no evidence. It shows the good sense of most gay people who realize that religion cannot be used as an excuse for personal responsibility. Now here's where the politics, in the disguise of police entrapment, comes in. The United States Supreme Court case of Lawrence v. TX (2003) overturned sodomy laws in all states. That decision said that if there is no commercial interest, and if the people involved are consenting adults, then private sexual activity is not illegal. So here's the kicker: Is the invitation for an anonymous encounter between two same-gender adults with the intent of private sexual _expression to be enacted in a rented motel room considered an act of sodomy in light of the Lawrence decision? It's up to Oklahoma County District Attorney Wes Lane, who by the way is up for re-election in 2006, to decide whether to file the lewdness charge against Lonnie "Luke". Will Mr. Lane see that the lewdness charge in this case is irrelevant in light of Lawrence, which will create precedence that will benefit all private encounters between all people regardless of gender? Will he allow the identical religious persuasions which Mr. Lane and Lonnie "Luke" share to intervene, telling Lonnie "Luke" to go and sin no more, using the ruse of insufficient evidence to dismiss the case? Should that happen, then all same-gender encounters will be at risk for continuing undercover entrapments as this case illustrates. To my knowledge, the Oklahoma City police department does not use female undercover agents to entrap male customers at predominately straight bars or other opposite-gender meeting places. Aren't straight men allowed unfettered association with the opposite-gendered in a social setting until they display unwanted conversation or activity? Why are gay men in Oklahoma City reduced to a more strict interpretation of the First Amendment right of association? Make no doubt about it: Homophobes are furious that the Lawrence decision removed a major club with which they could use against gay people. They will continue to use what remaining weapons they can find in their arsenal to defeat our drive for gay equality. ON MY DAY OF REST - A Veterans Day Weekend Ends - Bush Be Honored, Soldiers Just Die
15 Nov 2005
op-ed by local OKC veteran I did not want to get out of bed today, depressed and angry, I did not want to do anything. I can check all major media top stories from one web site, and all of them have a piece that defends Bush in his decision to involve us in the death and destruction of Iraq, for we're guessing oil, but nobody really knows and Bush aint saying and the media aint asking, Democracy is dead in America by Diebold and a chicken coward bought media.
