laura's SPIN :: Lynch Unscripted
Let a woman speak for herself and watch out. When Private Jessica Lynch told her own story in her own words in an interview with CBS, she sent the Bush team's media controllers reeling. Lynch said that while she was thankful to the soldiers who rescued her, she was troubled by the way the military had portrayed her "rescue" from a Nasirya hospital. It was wrong for DOD cameramen to videotape her exit, Lynch said. She felt she was used.
When asked by Diane Sawyer if she had gone down "like Rambo," (as the early news reports described,) Lynch said, "no, I went down praying on my knees." The real hero in the picture, she said, was her close friend Lori Piestewa, a Hopi single mother of two. One could almost hear the Ministry of Truth folks gasp. The young woman from Palestine, WV simply threw the official script out. Her audacity has made her a real hero after all -- but perhaps not to everyone.
West Virginia's Parkersburg News and Sentinel had this news last Friday: relatives told the paper that Lynch's brother, Greg, the man who once acted as the family's spokesman to the media, is being deployed to Iraq with the US Army. Coincidence? Perhaps two Lynch family members on the loose posed too much risk. The Army spokesperson quizzed by the paper wouldn't confirm or deny the news. |
