PETITION IN SUPPORT OF DRAKE STUDENTS Current rating: 0
10 Feb 2004
This is a petition NLG students have put together in support of the Drake NLG chapter. I have attached a Word file which includes the text of the petition. If anyone prints it out and gets signatures, please e-mail nlgumkc (at) yahoo.com and I will get a local address for you to send them to or you can fax them to a fax number I will send you (I simply do not wish to put this information on the site).

Thanks for your time and support,

Anthony Badgerow

AN OPEN LETTER OF SOLIDARITY WITH
THE DRAKE UNIVERSITY CHAPTER
OF THE NATIONAL LAWYERS GUILD
AND THE IOWA PEACE ACTIVISTS

During the week of February 4, 2004, an FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force issued subpoenas to four peace activists and to Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. The activists were subpoenaed to appear before a federal grand jury on Tuesday, February 10, 2004.

The FBI’s subpoena to Drake University ordered the production of all records related to a November 15, 2003 antiwar conference at the university called “Stop the Occupation! Bring the Iowa Guard Home!” The conference was sponsored by the Drake Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild and was followed the next day by a demonstration at the Iowa National Guard Headquarters in Johnston, at which 12 protesters were arrested on misdemeanor charges.

The records demanded in the subpoena to Drake University include: all records related to the scheduling of the conference and all documents indicating the purpose and intended participants in the meeting; all documents that would identify persons that actually attended the meeting; all records relating to the Drake chapter of the National Lawyers Guild which would identify the officers of the organization, the current location of any offices occupied by the organization, and any meeting agenda or annual reports of the organization filed with the University since January 1, 2002.

The Drake chapter of the National Lawyers Guild and the peace activists chose to act on their belief that the war against and occupation of Iraq is illegal and unjust. The students and activists were engaged in dissent against the government’s policies – a fundamental Constitutional right, provided for explicitly in the 1st Amendment.

We, the undersigned students, faculty, and staff of the University of Wisconsin Law School declare our solidarity with the students of the Drake University National Lawyers Guild and with the four peace activists targeted by this government action.

We assert the following:

• Open dissent with governmental policies is absolutely vital to maintain the health of a democratic society;

• We support the Drake students’ and peace activists’ lawful expression of dissent during the November 2003 antiwar conference;

• We stand in solidarity with the Drake students and the peace activists as they face the insidious power of a federal government that is becoming more and more willing to trample the Constitutional rights of the people than to protect them;

• We assert our belief in the rights protected by the United States Constitution, specifically, the rights to freedom of speech, expression, and association as codified in the First Amendment;

Page 2

• We will not allow the federal government’s actions in Iowa to intimidate us into giving up our Constitutional rights or to weaken our support of the right to engage in dissent;

• We hereby name ourselves honorary members of the Drake University chapter of the National Lawyers Guild.

Although we have had a victory (see http://kcindymedia.org/newswire/display/1260/index.php), feel free to hold onto these.
