Day with Mariani and Berg TOUR KC (photos at Unity) Current rating: 13
25 Feb 2004
Ellen Mariani and Phil Berg spoke with several
full vernues on Sunday, Feb.22. These are my
observations of a VERY fascinating day.
Mariani and Berg TOUR KC (photos at Unity)
The Ellen Mariani and Phil Berg entourage had many
speaking engagements lined up on their February 22nd
whirlwind 9-11 truth tour of Kansas City.

Their busy day opened at 6:15 to a cold rain in
Overland Park. They arrived at Channel 4 for a live
five minute interview which allowed an excellent 9-11
discussion by Mariani and Berg. They were quickly
rushed to another station, Channel 9 and set up for a
three minute live interview which also went very well.

After a live radio interview on KPRT with Rev. Sam Mann,
Ellen, Phil, and company then stopped for a hearty breakfast
at Nieces Restaurant before returning to St. Mark's church.

At St. Mark's Ellen, Phil and their entourage attended the
church service, before then speaking to the congregation
for a few minutes. The service began with beautiful,
soulful music. All new attendees introduced themselves
and Ellen and Phil received a warm welcome from St.
Mark's members.

One moving part of the service happened when a couple
of members approached Reverand Mann and began praying
privately with him. Reverand Mann asked for members
who could help to heal and pray to come up and stand
with a woman who was diagnosed with breast cancer. A sub
group of about twenty five church members embraced in
a loving circle, hugging and silently praying for the
woman. Afterwards, Ellen Mariani commented that she
was touched, and wished that that healing community
support was near when she was going through
the worst of her grief.

Upon leaving the service, Ellen and Phil were
surprised to be approached by two police officers in
an adjacent room. They were given a police business
card with a number to call if they had any (immediate)
concerns. More surprising were the two personal police
escort cars which then followed their van from the church
around Kansas City.

Immediately after the police discussion, a Channel 5
reporter requested to interview Ellen and Phil on the spot.
This spontaneous sidewalk interview with tough questions
was handled very well by Ellen.

The group left for a lively discussion at The
Community of Reason. This event held about seventy
five people, and included vigorous debate with
reasonable people.

Mariani and Berg then spoke with a roomful of members
at the Unitarian Universalist Church.

The day had turned into a sunny and mild one, making
the Mill Creek park protest very pleasant. Ellen and
Phil addressed about two hundred Kansas Citians at the
Park, amid much public honking support.

The crowd at Unity Temple gave enthusiastic
applause to Ellen Mariani, Phil Berg and Bill Douglas
throughout the program, and a standing ovation
at the end of their presentation (between 700-
1000 attendance estimates). Ellen Mariani also
expressed her appreciation to Kansas City, local
media, and the KCPD.

The events were well attended thoughout the day.
Between the speaking events, the protest, and the
finale Unity event, a rough guess would be that about
1500 Kansas Citians directly listened to Ellen Mariani
and Phil Berg speak. There is video footage of the
speakers and the large crowds which will be available to
the public in the future.

It is likely that thousands of other area residents saw
or heard the interviews from our local media. The local
stations (4, 5, and 9) did an admirable job of live
interview coverage and deserve an ackowledgement.

Ellen Mariani and Phil Berg's evening was topped off by
a fun Chinese dinner outing with the KC 911visibility.org
organizers after the Unity event.

This is the group that hosted their eventful KC
visit:

Thank you for giving us this report. I appreciate knowing how fully their time in KC was utilized and the response of the community to their being here.

Word is that the Walt Bodine show chickened out at the very last minute. Apparently KCUR replaced Ellen and Phil's time slot with a more important story about a blind musician.

I understand that many people have shared their disapproval. Does anyone know KCUR's contact information?
