As Soldiers Die in Iraq, Cheney Does Fundraiser for Graves

Of course, it was a fundraiser for Rep. Sam Graves. For Cheney to raise funds for the soldier's graves would be to acknowledge that they died in this illegal, immoral war he was so hell-bent on waging.
VP/PV (Vice President/Presidential Ventriloquist), Dick Cheney was in Kansas City on Friday to raise funds for the campaign of Rep. Sam Graves. Graves, by accepting this visit from the war-profiteering offical, has hands that are bloodily complicit in this death-machine. Also, bloody up to his elbows is Kansas City Chiefs' President, Carl Peterson, who presented the nation's top Dick with a Kansas City Chiefs' jersey, with the name "Cheney" and the number "04" emblazoned across it. The choice of numbers implies that the Chiefs are endorsing the Bush/Cheney ticket in '04', and by extension to be a Chief's fan is to be a fan of sacrificing our soldiers for Cheney's Halliburton. Those who object can register their opposition at promotions.lookandfeel.com/chiefspromo/promotions/PromoForm.jsp?site=kcc

Call-ins to local sports talk shows are also reccommended.

Meanwhile, outside the $250 a plate twenty minute lunch, several hundred demonstrators raised their voices against both the war on our soldiers and the war against our economy waged by the Cheney administration. Some signs managed to combine the two issues quite eloquently, calling for Cheney to be outsourced to Iraq. Signs that call for a stop to the 9-11 coverup were seen throughout the crowd of mostly union demonstrators who demanded to know where the jobs are. The 9-11 coverup signs were also featured quite prominently on at least two local broadcasts.

The police were respectful of the crowd, although a sneer was detected on the face Officer Hernandez, the officer who falsely arrested 9-11 activist Bill Douglas back in September when First Lady and Presidential Apologist Laura Bush was in town. At the trial, at which Douglas was found not guilty on both counts, Hernandez was reported to have said, "I don't understand the question" when asked by Douglas' lawyer if he had an obligation to protect Douglas' rights.

Although great efforts were made so that the Vice President did not have to see or hear the extreme objections to his extreme policy, one activist did manage capture the Dick-mobile departing.

My regards to officer Hernandez. Perhaps KCPD should have a remedial course in the constitutional rights for American citizens for such officers.

Also, it's kind of sad that those of us out fighting for 9-11 truth are fighting for truth about what killed many of KCPD's NYC police brothers and sisters . . . and then get arrested for our trouble.

Glad to see Hernandez behaved himself today. Get involved in the 9-11 truth movement at www.911visibility.org

If you would like to see pictures of this demonstration outside of the hotel, please feel free to peruse my collection of 160+ pics and some videos of the large group trying to storm the hotel. It really was an amazing moment. The protesters took over the streets and there are a couple of pictures of one of the cops holding what seemed to be an indudstrial sized mace container. It looked almost like a fire extinguisher. You can find the pics at http://www.ohthebill.com/911/2004-04%20(Apr)-23/ peace, Bill

Re: As Soldiers Die in Iraq, Cheney Does Fundraiser for Graves

Here is an update forwarded from the Westminster College demo.

The Cheney protest staged this past Monday, April 26 at Westminster College, was visible and highly successful. Thanks in large part to Mark Haim and the folks at Peaceworks , we had a turnout of at least 50 protesters, by my estimate. It was a little hard to get an adequate count, as people showed up and drifted away from time to time. At any one time we had no less that 20 demonstrators all holding signs and banners advocating an end to the Iraqi war, “Support our Troops – Bring Them Home,” “Cheney Catches Iraqi Fever and 718 Soldiers Die” and requests that “Cheney, Tear Down Your Wall of Lies!” The picket line started in front of the church on the corner of Seventh and Westminster at about 10:15. We had the north side of the street and about twelve counter demonstrators had the south side. The area around the Historic Gymnasium where the speech was to be given was almost completely roped off with Yellow Police Line tape. As the time of Cheney’s arival approached, and as our numbers grew, we spread out from the intersection down toward Fourth Street (Route F) where Cheney was expected to arrive. We were allowed to go only up to the tape, about 50 yards from the entrance drive. About 12 of us were there with signs held high as the limo and accompanying SS (I mean Secret Service, not Storm Troopers) cars pulled into the driveway. Mark’s group kept their vigil at Seventh St. We had the satisfaction of knowing that the first view Cheney had of the campus, was of people with signs protesting his presence. After he passed, we moved up closer to the Gym and were joined by more members of the Westminster Democrats and about ten to fifteen counter demonstrators from the campus Young Republicans. We shouted slogans such as “End the War” and “Vote for Kerry.” When the Young Republicans started with “Four More Years,” we joined in with “No More Years,” to drown them out. The press descended and did interviews with both sides. After the speech, we resumed the chants as the audience exited the Gym. Our ranks again grew as anti administration sympathizing students that were in the audience left the gym. I understand some walked out during the second half of the speech when Cheney launched into an uncalled-for, full-scale rant against Kerry. After the crowd cleared, we were allowed up onto the drive almost in front of the Gym – but not right in front as Cheney had yet to depart. This brought the hostile factions in pretty close proximity. A semi-deranged and quite agitated self-proclaimed Vietnam veteran began haranguing us with insulting remarks about Kerry’s war record. Although urged not to respond, some of the pro Kerry students got excited and yelled back. For a few brief moments, two rather burly guys from opposing sides were in each other’s faces. TV cameras closed in hoping for violence. It looked like a physical confrontation was at hand until one of the professors from our side separated them. Both sides returned to a safe distance and the shouting resumed.

For the most part, the confrontations seemed to have more a sense of self-conscious bluster than real malice. People do not, I think, feel comfortable in a face-to-face confrontation. It’s easier to hate when the “enemy” is more distant, abstract, misunderstood and dehumanized. I most regret not having the chance to sit down with the “enemy” and try to employ a rational discussion. I am truly interested in how they came by their ideas and slogans. Some of the placards they held up seemed to be paraphrased from “1984.” I quote: “Bush for Education,” “Bush for Health Care,” “Bush for the Economy” and “Bring Democracy to Iraq.” I half-expected to see: “War is Peace” and “Freedom is Slavery.”

I really hate to think of them as merely victims of demagoguery – but I have yet to hear any argument that has been put forth for the administration that makes any sense to me – including Thomas Freedman, James Woolsey and William Bennett. My gods! sometimes I am tempted to desert the cause and move to the other side for a time to help make their case for them. I feel I understand it so much better than they do. I believe the reasoning for there cause can be made with as much validity as ours. My objections are not as much with their reasons as with the premises upon which these reasons are based: greed, chauvinism, imperialism, racism and the self-serving uses of violence.

After a little more heated “discussion” and when it looked like Cheney would not be exiting the Gym soon, the Republicans drifted away. Our group dwindled as well, except for the campus Democrats who were waiting for a promised press conference. I heard they did a good job in front of the cameras.

All in all, I would call the demonstration a success. I’m sure Cheney was aware of our presence – not that it makes much what people think, to a Dick(tator.) The press had plenty of interviews and footage to cover, so that it might just dawn on the wider world that a growing number of us do not support their illegal war or this administration.

We need to keep in touch and try at all cost to support demonstrations of this type. We brought an end to the Vietnam War this way and we can end this Iraqi War also.

As we used to say in the 60’s: “POWER TO THE PEOPLE!”

misguided - naive and foolish - fantasies and grandure for the "people" - those who do not study history (not interpret) are doomed to repeat it....

To think that you can appease the nation of islam is frighteningly naive - you really need to study what the leaders of the "nation" are preaching and what their true objectives and goals are - if you are willing to sacrifice all you are and all that is yours for a dangerous and foolish gesture then good for you- I'm for rooting the problem out before it gets any bigger - just ask Mr. Chamberlain if the Nazis were going to keep their word and he would say "I have Mr. Hitler's signature" - a lot of good it did the world to take the word of a madman - given the chance I am sure that knowing what they know now that the "world's greatest generation" would certainly act pre-emptively to avoid the entire war in 1939 -

I wish there were no wars and everyone on the planet had enough to eat - but I highly doubt our enemies harbor the same sentiments - some food for thought - stop looking at the world through western eyes only - if you try to see as they do, don't do it with western predispositions - arm yourself with fact and reality before you attempt to lecture the world on your views
