History of LD Debate –

In a time when Presidential debates feature prewritten 2-minute “speeches”, canned rebuttals, and above all, a focus on image and “looking presidential”, the 1850’s debates between Abraham Lincoln and Steven Douglas are a refreshing idea. The debates came at a time when America was in crisis over the issue of slavery. They incorporated not only current events, but long, high-level arguments, political philosophy and underlying moral theory, to promote a nationwide debate on the morality of slavery.

About the LD-style debates –

The Lincoln-Douglas style debates are shorter in the interest of time (45-minutes). However, the in-depth, value-based discussion of issues is maintained. Each side upholds a “value”, such as liberty, democracy, safety, or property, and a “value criterion” that serves to measure the values. We chose these resolutions because they offer good clash, are relevant in today’s world, and deserve more scrutiny than the 10-second soundbytes they get on CNN. The debates are open to everyone, but please register in advance. The audience is encouraged to comment at the end of the round and will cast the deciding vote. We hope to start a regular LD debate club that will begin with these resolutions and take off!

About 39th Street MOJO –

The debates are part of the 4th annual MOJO Culture Fair, with poets, artists, dancers and over 60 bands converging on the 39th Street Art District to rock Kansas City!
