Events in Lawrence, KS for the International Day of Solidarity with Jeff 'Free' Luers |
In June of 2000, 22-year-old forest defense activist Jeffrey “Free” Luers
was sentenced to an astonishing 22.5 years in prison for the burning of
three SUVs at Romania Chevrolet in Eugene, Oregon and an attempted arson.
Free has continued to participate in the movement through his writings and
website.
This is the fourth year that Free has been imprisoned and held captive by
the state. We aim to call attention to his unjust sentence and strengthen
his work by promoting a day of solidarity.
Events in Lawrence include
Free Free Now! Rally
Saturday, June 12 at 1pm in front of the Douglas County Courthouse (11th
and Massachusetts) Bring signs calling for justice for Free as well as
protection of and respect for the earth, animals, and the environment.
Film Showing: “Green with a Vengeance”
Olivia Rousset, an Australian videographer and journalist, produced this
video report for Dateline Australia back in 2001 on the “Earth
Liberation Front.” Features some of the only video footage of Free in
prison, plus interviews with Professor Bron Taylor, former ELF
spokesperson Craig Rosebraugh and anarchist-author John Zerzan. This is
one of the best pieces on the US ecological defense movement and Jeff’s
case.
Saturday, June 12 at 4pm at the Lawernce Public Library (7th and Vermont)
We will have the opportunity to discuss the film and Jeff’s case, as well
as sign postcards of solidarity to send to Jeff.
Donations will be accepted on Free’s behalf.
Please spread the word about these events and invite all of your friends
to attend. |
