News :: Lawrence
Nine arrested in Lawrence during peaceful march Current rating: 0
06 Nov 2004
Nine activists arrested this afternoon in Lawrence during a peaceful anti-war march.
Around 1:30 pm, 25 activists marched from South Park down Massachusetts Street in protest of the current invasion of Fallujah. Local police accosted activists at 9th & Kentucky, asking them to move off of the street.

Police told activists that, "fun and games are over. We let you march on Mass.; now you have to get on the sidewalk."

Police cited a non-specific ordinance about parade permits. Arrests began when activists questioned police about this unknown marching ordinance. Despite the fact that most activists were standing less than a foot away from the curb, police began arresting everyone who wasn't literally on the sidewalk. Many stood on the sidewalk and peacefully observed the arrests.

Police activity was questionable at best. Authorities refused to take witness testimonial from anyone who didn't first give their full name, address, and phone number. Those who didn't give this information were told they couldn't give a witness testimonial.

Police denied oberservers information such as badge numbers, names, and why arrests were being made. Arrestee's bags and other personal items were confiscated and searched.

Brutality may have been at hand as well. An observer stated that he saw an activist begin screaming and writhing after claiming that police had kicked him in the groin. The activist was hand-cuffed and lying face-down on the street.

As you can tell by pictures, the eleven police vehicles made much more of a road obstruction than the 25 marchers. An ironic end to our march.

Bail for these nine protesters is set at $415. If you'd like to contribute to bond fund to bail out these protesters, please contact Kansas Mutual Aid: (785) 331-6654.
