Cupcakeland Chronicles #2 - Phill Kline Resign

These days it seems like the rare day where one wakes up and finds some good news splashed across the front page of the local newspaper. Today was one of those special days and the good news involves a decision by the Kansas City Royals not to build a new stadium in downtown Kansas City.

No Downtown Stadium – These days it seems like the rare day where one wakes up and finds some good news splashed across the front page of the local newspaper. Today was one of those special days and the good news involves a decision by the Kansas City Royals not to build a new stadium in downtown Kansas City. This still leaves us with the planned hockey/basketball arena downtown which still has no teams lined up for this stupid project. But at least the Royals made a smart decision that their fans support but which will have some of the local developers weeping in their martinis tonight.

Kansas City, like many medium-sized cities in the United States, is run by a local business elite which exploits Chamber of Commerce inferiority propaganda to sway local citizens to support stupid boondoggle projects. Kansas City doesn’t need a new baseball stadium—the current complex is in good shape and people love the stadium. The Royals organization has opted for fixing up the current stadium with taxpayer money, but this is much better than pouring money down developer pockets just to build a new stadium downtown.

Phill Kline Resign – Kansans need to speak up and ask that right-wing Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline resign his position immediately. The Kansas City Star is reporting this morning that six news organizations have condemned Kline and the Kansas Board of Education for holding private meetings in violation of open meetings laws. The real problem here is that Kline has publicly admitted that he is using his office to promote the agenda of right-wing religious nuts who are hell-bent on promoting creationism in public schools. In the recent illegal meetings, AG Kline informed the Board of Education that he would defend them if they were challenged on their plan to force anti-evolution stickers onto science textbooks around the state.

Kansans have suffered through this controversy once before, when right wing religious zealots were successful in taking over the State Board of Education and mandating that creationism be taught in schools. This made Kansas a laughingstock around the world until smart Kansans stepped in and removed the zealots from the Board. The current scandal is not about open meetings, rather the obvious efforts of a public official to promote religious ideas in schools and at the same time promoting ignorance as an alternative to accepted science. Phill Kline needs to resign immediately and these religious nuts have to be removed from the Board of Education.

Local Merchants of Death – Did you know that Black & Veatch is one of the biggest defense contractors in the Kansas City area?

Music We Like - David Rovics, one of my favorite folk musicians, will be performing a benefit for the Crossroads Infoshop on February 18 at 8pm (at the infoshop which is located at 1830 Locust St.)
