The Republican leadership in the House of Representatives is pushing for approval of the Central American Free Trade Agreement. Many NGOs in Central America and in the U.S. have been opposing it for years.
Encourage your representative strongly to vote aganst it. |
If we are lucky, we have about two weeks to prevent a major castrophe from hitting the people in North and Central America – throughout the United States, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador Nicaragua, and Costa Rica. By July 28, the House of Representatives in Washington must decide whether to bind all of us to the loss of livelihoods, the loss of sovereignty, and the loss of opportunity to get ahead in our lives.
By that date, the House must deicde whether to chain us to the Dominican Republic - Central American Free Trade Agreement (usually referred to as CAFTA) or keep the people in all those nations better able to control their lives by voting CAFTA down.
Here are some of the ways in which CAFTA is bad for people:
CAFTA extends patent monopolies, thus keeping vitally needed medicines from low income people in all the countries to be in the agreement.
CAFTA is likely to end the jobs of thousands of farmers, just as it did about 1.5 million Mexican farmers under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). And that means farmers in the U.S. as well as the other countries involved.
CAFTA give corporate CEOs the power to challenge any laws in another country which might interfere with its current or hoped-for profits. And that includes laws meant to protect the environment or help make agriculture sustainable (that is, make it productive in the future as well as right now).
Endanger small businesses. In the first three years of NAFTA, about 28,000 small businesses in Mexico were forced to close.
Increase immigration into the United States. Immigration from Mexico doubled from 1994 to 2000.
Cripple the ability of governments to insist on national health, safety, environmental and labor protections for their citizens.
But to stop the damage, we must all contact the members of the House of Representatives from this area and ask them to VOTE AGAINST CAFTA. Here are the names and phone numbers of the representatives from the metro area:
Missouri
Sam Graves 816-792-3976
Emanuel Cleaver 816-842-4545
Ike Skelton 816-228-4242
Kansas
Dennis Moore 913-383-2013 |
