Whose streets? Our Streets? Environmental group faces legal battle over Critical Mass bike ride. Current rating: 0
16 Aug 2005
The future of Critical Mass in New York City remains uncertain, as environmental group TIME’S UP! is forced to foot the bill for an impending court battle.

As a landmark court case threatens to shut down New York’s popular Critical Mass ride, and forces one organization to take the blame, we take a look at the last year of controversy surrounding the ride and at the case brought against TIME’S UP, a pro bike environmental group caught in the middle. This is a case that not only threatens the continuation of the ride itself, but also New Yorker’s First Amendment rights to free speech and free assembly due to the case’s far reaching implications.

•What does it have to do with me?

When a city or state attempts to curtail citizens civil rights, the ramifications can spread like a forest fire that indiscriminately crosses over state lines, except that a forest fire doesn’t think tactically, city and state authority do. If one state passes a law, it is not unusual to see the exact same or similar law being adopted in another state, because the law has already been successfully implemented elsewhere, therefore setting a precedent. Thus if the city of New York is successful in their case against TIME’S UP! don’t be surprised when your city or state decides to do the very same thing. The thing to remember is how much easier it will be for your city to pass a similar law if NYC wins in the courts.
