In Germany they first came for the Communists, and I
didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't
a Jew.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up
because I wasn't a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I
was a Protestant.
Then they came for me and by that time no one was left to speak
up. - Pastor Martin Niemöller
To kick off the Weekend
of Resistance against the Green Scare and in response to the federal
government's attacks on the environmental movement, we are launching
GreenScare.org as a site that provides current news and other resources
about Operation Backfire, the SHAC 7, Rod Coronado, Eric McDavid, Zach
Jenson, and others currently affected by the repressive tactics used by
federal agencies.
This administration is taking draconian
measures against dissidents. Some environmental activists who are
currently accused of incidents of property destruction that harmed no
one are facing mandatory minimums of life in prison if convicted of all
counts. Right now their focus is on environmental activists, but who is
to say where the focus will be next; who will be the next target of
Grand Juries and such outlandish charges? This is why it is so important
to resist the Green Scare now, before this repression spreads to
even more communities that organize around other issues. It is
important to learn from the McCarthy-era Red Scare and Cointelpro
activities in the 1960's and 70's that solidarity is key to winning the
struggle against this administration which uses divide and conquer
tactics to eliminate any perceived threat to its functioning.
If environmental and animal rights groups were on the margins of the
broader left, they can no longer afford to be. It is imperative that
those who are fighting their charges or serving ridiculous sentences
(like Jeff "Free" Luers) are defended and supported and that information
about their cases is spread to a much larger audience. GreenScare.org
hopes to be one tool to help bridge that gap. It is meant to be an
accessible website that provides general and comprehensive information
about the scope and developments of the Green Scare.
There are
43 events worldwide for this Weekend of Resistance. Check out one in
your city and tell your friends.
