Our comrades are stuck in Biloxi, MS. They were offred jobs through a Kansas City Labor compnay, to do clean up in New Orleans. They were promised a hotel as housing, a food stipend, and that they would be restoring schools and hospitals. In actuality, they are stationed in Biloxi Misssissippi, cleaning a Casino. They have been denied housing, and are forced to sleep two to a seat on the chartered bus they arrived in. They have also been denied adequate food. They are supposedly going to get a food stipend each week, but there is a national guard patrolled 6pm curfew in the area, so becasue they are working 11 hour days they are unable to even buy food.
At this point people have been told that they are not allowed to leave, and that they are being forced to stay for the duration of their contract. which could be up to 8 weeks.
They went down there hoping to help the people of louisiana not the corporate interests of the casino and other large business owners. They went down there with the intention of cleaning schools and hospitals to be used in refugee relief, now they are stuck in an extremely dangerous situation.
Please alert everyone about supposed paid humanitarian efforts through private labor corporations. And if anyone has any information about this situation or others like it please contact me:

our friends are on there way home, so they are safe for the moment. But please spread the word about these private companies trying to capitalize off other peoples good intentions. This is just yet another way the capitalist system has chosen to exploit the Katrina situation. |
