Announcement: Labor
Please support nurses' struggle for adequate patient care next Tuesday at the PlAza, 8P.M.
Imagine yourself in a hospital bed, in pain, but you can't get medication because your nurse has 13 other patients to care for. This reality in Kansas City HCA hospitals (formerly Health Midwest) contrasts with new California state laws, which mandate four patients per nurse on most units. Additionally, nurses generally work 12-hour shifts, often without lunch or even bathroom breaks.

Exhaustion contributes to the 100,000 annual deaths due to medical mistakes, as well as to a vicious cycle of understaffing -- half a million R.N.s have quit nursing because of working conditions, futher burdening the remaining R.N.s' workloads.

Nurses have unionized 3 HCA hospitals, and are in suspense about the results of a fourth election. They are expecting to finish negotiating their first contract in October, and depend on community support in order to demand that HCA increase staffing levels. COME TO NICHOLS FOUNTAIN ON THE PLAZA ON TUESDAY JULY 1ST from 8-9 p.m. TO SAY THAT THIS ABUSE OF BOTH NURSES AND PATIENTS IS NOT OKAY! OUR LIVES ARE ON THE LINE!

Nurses' United Mission Statement: Nurses United for Improved Patient care is committed to asserting responsibility by empowering the Registered Nurse to be a voice and advocate for patients. Our voices are essential to achieve and secure the necessary balance between quality of care, patient safety, and cost-containment. Our commitment is to is to overcome the obstacles that compromise quality care and our own professional achievement. Our goal is to continually protect the well being of our patients and the future of professional nursing.
