Justice Department official Kris Kobach, a contributor to the so-called "Patriot Act II" (Domestic Security Enhancement Act) has stated an intention to run for Congress against Dennis Moore next November. While the article says he "may" run for Congress, Kobach has been discussing such a run for quite a while. |

Justice Department official returns to Kansas, may run for Congress
Associated Press
WASHINGTON - A Justice Department official is returning to Kansas and may run for Congress.
Kris Kobach plans to resign Friday as counsel to Attorney General John Ashcroft, a position he has held since becoming a White House fellow in September 2001. He has helped Ashcroft on immigration policies.
Kobach said Monday he is considering running for the Republican nomination for the congressional seat held by Democratic Rep. Dennis Moore, who plans to seek re-election. Three other Republicans are running or considering it.
Before working for the Justice Department, Kobach served on the Overland Park, Kan., City Council and taught at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Law School. He will return to his teaching job at the university, Kobach said Monday.
Already in the race for Congress is Adam Taff, a former Navy fighter pilot who in 2002 lost the general election to Moore, who won with 50 percent of the vote to Taff's 47 percent.
Considering the race are Kansas state Rep. Patricia Barbieri-Lightner and Jeff Colyer, the Overland Park plastic surgeon who lost the 2002 GOP primary to Taff. |

If you caught Kobach at the UMKC debate with Georgetown Professor David Cole, you know what a patronizing Bush yes-man he is. Talk about putting a good education to bad use!
When he was questioned about the leak of Patriot II, he dismissed it as Justice Dept. "brainstorming, nothing more." Cole replied something to the effect that if the Justice Dept. is sitting around brainstorming about how to revoke Americans' citizenship (included in the PII draft), then we should be very worried.
Kansas already has Roberts, Brownback, Tiahart, Ryun and (whoever the 5th uber-rightwinger is representing our state). We can't afford to lose the one democratic seat we have -- even if it is Moore's. |
