The holiday light displays waste huge amounts of electricity, destroying the environment. KC's famous fountains waste water in times of extreme drought. |
The media made a big deal about the annual start of KC's huge holiday light displays. What a waste of electricity! This unnecessary electricity use destroys the environment. See all those Union Pacific and BNSF coal trains carrying coal for power plants; the power plants create acid rain and water heat pollution, and the coal was gotten from extremely destructive mines. Some electricity is generated at Truman Dam, an environmental disaster that nearly made Paddlefish extinct by flooding their spawning areas and blocking their migration, while destroying hundreds of thousands of acres with seasonal flooding that prevents trees from growing.
KC is well-known for having lots of fountains. These fountains waste water. The Missouri River is currently flowing at under 20,000 feet per second. When the Missouri reaches such low levels, side channels go completely dry because the Corps of Engineers forces water into the main channel for the measly number of barges that travel up and down the Missouri. Most river life needs water in the sloughs and chutes to survive, including the young of endangered species. This year had EXTREME drought (that's even worse than severe drought). We cannot afford to waste any water. In addition to theft of water from the Missouri, the Ogallala aquifer in Kansas is nearly depleted. Most of the water theft goes to irrigation farming, but every drop helps, so turn off the fountains! |
