Goodyear will put $1 billion into the retirement program to cover medical costs for union members, but this was only half of what the union had demanded from the company. The company will drop its plan to close its plant in Tyler, Texas.

1,300 workers at Goodyear's tire plant in Topeka, Kansas participated in the strike. On December 16, 2006, as part of a national day of solidarity actions for the striking workers, a group of activists from Lawrence, Kansas traveled to Topeka to join the picket lines, where they were warmly welcomed by Goodyear workers and members of their families.

Part of the Topeka tire plant manufactures tires for the U.S. military. Lawrence activists talked to strikers about the war and found that many of them opposed it.
