Wal-Mart leaves little choice |

In criticizing the “Frontline” program “Is Wal-Mart Good for America?” Jerry Heaster (The Star, Nov. 19) accuses the show of “ignoring the most relevant point” about Wal-Mart that individual consumers freely choose Wal-Mart and that “Wal-Mart has been a boon to lower- and middle-income Americans.”
Do consumers freely choose Wal-Mart? Not really. “Frontline” shows Wal-Mart's corporate purchasing strategy of using its size to bully suppliers to constantly lower costs until they have no choice but to move to China. While the documentary mentions China's entry into the World Trade Organization, it fails to explain how U.S. trade policies conveniently ignore the massive violations of human rights by suppliers in China, Mexico, Bangladesh and others and still get open access to U.S. markets, where consumers freely choose to buy products made by children because they're cheap.
Since Wal-Mart uses competition to force other retailers to do the same thing, those of us who choose not to shop Wal-Mart really have no choice. Where can you find U.S.-made TVs, shoes or women's clothing anymore anyway?
Heaster thinks that's OK since “those imports … are goods that U.S. producers have no business making anyway.” Excuse me, but American TV workers and their bosses didn't freely choose to lose their jobs so they could shop cheaper at Wal-Mart. |
