Urgent Action and Article on Police Brutality in Miami |
Submitted by: Tom Klammer / 23 Nov 2003
Publisher: ftaaimc.org

November 2003 will go down in history as the day the US proved that it is willing to resort to the same policies of violent repression of dissent that it has supported for decades throughout the global south. Whether it will mark an embarrassing isolated tragedy or a turning point in how the US government relates to its citizenry depends on how civil society responds right now to this outrageous and blatant violation of their constitutional and human rights.

Police hold activists but discard property |
Submitted by: Tom Klammer / 22 Nov 2003
Publisher: The Miami Herald

Friday, protesters just out of jail trickled into Miami police headquarters asking about their belongings. When Elizabeth Ferguson, 17, of East Lansing, Mich., asked police Friday about her ID, credit cards and money, a sergeant said the city was in ''a state of high alert'' and told her to contact internal affairs. Another officer told her to come back Monday. ''Now, without money, credit cards or IDs, I can get arrested for loitering over the weekend,'' she said |

Gen. Tommy Franks says that if the United States is hit with a weapon of mass destruction that inflicts large casualties, the Constitution will likely be discarded in favor of a military form of government.
Franks, who successfully led the U.S. military operation to liberate Iraq, expressed his worries in an extensive interview he gave to the men’s lifestyle magazine Cigar Aficionado.
(successfully 'liberated'?????) |

Media Analysis of National and Local Media Coverage of the FTAA |
Submitted by: tk / 21 Nov 2003
Publisher: ftaa imc
|
I've had ABC on TV this morning. Barely a mention of Bush protests in UK, nothing on FTAA, nothing yet on Medicare handout to HMO's and Pharmaceutical Co.s, nothing on overtime, nothing on FCC rollback news from yesterday, but about 20 minutes of Michael Jackson, his mugshot, his plane arrival with detailed commentary, analysis of his lipstick, analysis of possible legal strategies and on and on.
"The proposed Free Trade Area of the Americas agreement (FTAA) is one of the most important issues of the day, and if implemented, would be the largest "free trade" block in the world. But almost all major corporate media outlets have virtually blacked it out in their coverage this week, opting instead for stories such as the headline grabbing Michael Jackson scandal. Unfortunately, this is not the first time Americans have been denied substantive and balanced information on one the most important economic issues of the day."

"According to news reports, as the march ended and the AFL-CIO-sponsored crowd dispersed, police confronted a separate group of demonstrators then also pepper-sprayed peaceful union members and allies who were watching the melee from atop a small hill. More details were unavailable Thursday evening."
