No more troops to Afghanistan! Bring them all back now!
The Socialist Alliance views the February 21 announcement by the Australian government to send 200 more troops to Afghanistan as a regressive development, and calls on it to reverse the decision and to remove all the troops currently stationed in Afghanistan and Iraq. Canberra's decision comes shortly after Washington's announcement that it will be withdrawing 3000 troops from Afghanistan.
Both the government and the ALP opposition claim that the new troop deployment (to the Oruzgan province in south-central Afghanistan) - which will bring Australia's occupation force in that country to around 500 by mid-year - is aimed at helping reconstruct the country.
The defendant was a ring-leader, if not the leader, of the inmates involved. He was the main protagonist and was instrumental in planning what occurred and recruiting others to become involved...
The explanation proffered for the rampage is concern about prison conditions and on the information put before the Court it must be said that those concerns were legitimate and the defendant, in particular, had reason for concern.

When the Immigration gestapo pounce on you, you're taken away immediately, no phone calls, no chance to pop home for a change of clothes, no chance to return your video rentals, no chance to arrange for someone to look after the cat. You're just seized, for being deemed"illegal," by this so-called civilised nation, and the cat is left alone in your apartment, and you are locked away, locked away for days, worrying about your beloved puss puss, and the days become weeks and months, and your cat is long dead.
This is just one of the many heartbreaking stories reported directly (first hand) to me by residents and ex-residents of Immigration Detention Centres.
SquatFest, “the anti-Tropfest fest”, is desperately seeking a guest celebrity to hand over the trophy to the winning filmmaker at next week’s annual festival.
SquatFest happens every year at the same date and time as TropFest. While the hopeful entrants for TropFest are fretting about whether they'll get the chance to move up a rung in the Hollywood Sweatshop, artists and activists from 'round Australia are living it up, projecting films and videos in an inspiring squatted venue.

Christians Against All Terrorism
On the 2nd anniversary of the death of TJ Hickey, justice has still been denied. The Redfern community is standing strong though, determined not to be silenced, not to be screwed over by the system yet again.
People gathered together today to remember TJ, and to protest against the system that murdered him. It was a successful day. It started with a solemn remembrance of TJ, then a rally and march to Surry Hills police station. A loud and passionate confrontation with the police took place. The event unfortunately ended with police harassment before the community returned to the Block for a barbecue

On Friday 20 January, police in the semi-rural town of Bowral (NSW)
removed an anti-Howard political poster from a street stall following
an alleged complaint, or complaints, from the public. The poster was a
large homemade amateurish affair, comprising photographs of Adolph
Hilter and John Howard with the Question posed above them 'SPOT THE
DIFFERENCE', and below them the Answer 'THEY BOTH LOVE FASCISM'.
The poster removed by police was the work of the local branch of the
right-wing populist Citizens Electoral Council (CEC), an outfit founded
during the 1980s in Queensland and closely associated with the American
organization of political activist and perpetual Presidential candidate

Its like Crazy Clints Bargains down here at Jura. After numerous, saintly volunteers have spent hours organising the Fanya Baron Library, we've got cartons of old books to get rid of. So... Jura is having a sale. A giant sale that could mean you're walking home with a box of lovely books at a bonza price.
Here's the deal, there are two components:
- Ex-library books between 50 cents and $2 each. These books include a wide range of topics, not just radical literature. From psycology to Socrates, Footrot Flats to the Bible. There are thousands of titles ready to be snapped up.
Approximately 60-70 protesters turned up to protest against this crook corporation with assorted flags, bunting, placards and a 'Wheelie Good Sound System'.
The employer has been steadily freezing out unionists and attempting to deunionize the workforce on Sydney Harbour. In the latest instance the employer has refused the MUA delegate for engineers any work. The MUA delegate who attended the rally with his wife and five month old baby was impressed by the solidarity extended to him and his family.
More action will follow.........stay tuned agitators!
